With COVID-19 still being the threat and many people spending more time at home, cleaning your house has never been as important as it is now. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend more time and money cleaning it. We have some suggestions to make your life easier. Here is a list of 10 tips for cleaning your house with products you probably already own.

1. Clean your toilet with Coke

There is nothing worse than a dirty and germ-filled toilet. Here is an easy but efficient way to make the toilet shine and be germ-free. Pour the cola around the rim and let it flow down into the bowl, then let it sit overnight. The next morning  give it a quick scrub with a brush and then flush the toilet and that’s it. Cola contains phosphoric and carbonic acid, which makes it a highly effective cleaning solution for toilets.

2. Clean your shower doors with lemon and salt.

Huge misconception is that you need expensive and caustic products to clean shower doors. But there is an easy and safe way to clean them without using cleaning products. You only need lemon (which can be substituted with grapefruit) and salt. Cut a lemon in half, put salt on it and scrub shower doors. The abrasives of the salt and the acidity of the lemon eats away the soap scum and mineral build up from shower doors. Although using lemon and salt is efficient for removing dirt it is not a substitute for antibacterial cleaning and therefore, cannot be used as a way to remove bacteria from your surfaces. For antibacterial cleaning we got you covered.

3. Clean the bathtub and sink stains with grapefruit and salt.

Salt and grapefruit (of course you can use lemon instead of grapefruit) can be used for removing bathtub and sink stains. The combination of acidic fruit and salt works marvelously well for cleaning dirty baths, shower surfaces and sinks leaving your home with a pleasant fruity smell. Same as before, cut the grapefruit in half and rub it in salt. Then scrub the grapefruit around your sink or bath. The reasoning is also the same as in the previous tip.

4. Clean your shower head with vinegar.

Keeping a clean shower head is very important. Not only that dirty shower head is gross, it can also be contaminated with bacteria (Mycobacterium avium) which can cause serious respiratory health issues.  But luckily there is an easy tip for removing unwanted buildup, grime, and limescale from your shower head with minimal effort from you. Fill a sandwich bag (plastic bag is also a good alternative) with vinegar and baking soda and put the showerhead into the sandwich bag, making sure it is fully covered in liquid. Put a rubber band on the bag to Secure the bag from spillage. Leave shower head in the bag overnight. And finally in the morning, turn on the shower to allow the water to run through. If you have a problem with just limescale you can soak your shower head in a mixture of boiling water and vinegar to remove any limescale easily.

5. Clean your microwave with steam.

Using a microwave is a good way to save time but cleaning it is a different story. Often it can be very tricky and time consuming to properly clean it. Our suggestion is that whenever you want to clean your microwave, you put first a heat-proof cup of water in the microwave and set it on high settings for two minutes. Then leave the cup for an additional  5 minutes. After that just use a regular cloth to wipe the microwave. The steam created by heating the water will loosen the grime in your microwave and make it possible to easily wipe it with a cloth instead of scrubbing it. Also if you can spare half a lemon you can put it in a cup of water before you place it in the microwave and your kitchen will be left with a pleasant fruity smell.

6. Keep your fridge smelling nice

A lot of food and drinks sometimes even our favorite can leave a bad smell in the fridge. And when that happens it’s very time consuming to get rid of it. But there is a way to prevent it. Whenever you use a lemon don’t throw away its peel, instead put it in the fridge. Put some on top and some on bottom shelves. Scent of lemon will mask even strong smells. For lemon peel to last longer you can sprinkle salt on it before putting it in the fridge.

7. Remove dust from screens without harming them

We all know that cleaning television, computer and tablet screens with wrong chemicals can damage them. And even cleaning them with the right chemicals and regular cloth (instead of lint-free cloth) almost always leaves unwanted fibers and lint. That can be frustrating because now instead of dust we are left with fibers and lint. Our advice is to use coffee filters. Because coffee filters are lint-free and cant scratch your screen, they’re the perfect tool for cleaning any type of screen. Cleaning screens with a coffee filter also cuts static on the screen, that results in your screen not only being clean but will attract less dust and stay clean longer.  For mobile phones we suggest using an alcohol wipe. The reason for that  is because we all use cell phones most and therefore their screens are dirtiest.

8. Clean your window and mirrors using white vinegar and newspaper

Most people think it’s almost impossible to get a crystal clear finish when cleaning mirrors or windows yourself. Using regular clothes to clean your glass and mirror almost always leaves a trail of lint and streak. Because of that we suggest using newspapers.  Its dense material won’t leave lint and streak. Also newspapers are ideal to use on glass because of their soft fibers that won’t scratch it.  White vinegar is a great cleaning agent because of its acidic nature that helps to break down any grease and oil on the glass. This is how we suggest you clean glass yourself. First crunch up newspaper into a ball, then mix half white vinegar and half water into a bowl. If you have an empty spray bottle fill it but it’s not necessary. Now apply liquid to the window or mirror and use the crunched newspaper to wipe the surface. Last step is to wipe it dry with newspaper.

9. Clean your silver cutlery with toothpaste

There is an easy and efficient way to keep silver items in great condition without using any special chemicals. You will need only water and toothpaste. The most important thing is that toothpaste contains fluoride. Good thing is that most do. Put silver cutlery in a bowl filled with water, then take them out and put toothpaste on them and rub toothpaste into the silver slowly keeping it wet. Then let it rest for five minutes. Last step is to remove toothpaste with water and dry cutlery with a towel. You will immediately see results. If you are not completely satisfied, repeat the process one more time.

10. Remove water marks from tables with a hairdryer

Everybody sometimes forgets to put drinks on coasters. And seeing water rings that glasses leave on your wooden coffee table is so irritating. But there is a quick solution to this problem. Just use a hair dryer. Put a hair dryer on the lowest setting and move it around the water ring. Be sure to move it constantly to prevent heat from damaging the wood.
